Karlovci in film

Samac u braku

A 2014 romantic series directed by Ivan Stefanović, adapted by Milena Depolo from Mir-Jam’s novel. Miloš Biković and Brankica Sebastijanović play Radmilo and Ljiljana, whose marriage begins with very different expectations.

Karlovci becomes a small town of the 1930s, where everyday encounters unfold beneath familiar façades. Filming also took place in Belgrade and the Košutnjak studios.

St Nicholas Cathedral

The film opens this town-square sequence with the cathedral’s paired towers. Their clock faces and slender spires rise above autumn leaves: before the townspeople gather below, the familiar skyline establishes Karlovci as the setting for the story’s public life.

Trg Branka Radičevića — the town square

A period-costume crowd in the Karlovci square, with the Patriarchal Palace fence behind it.

The camera looks down on a gathering in the square beside the cathedral. The iron fence of the Patriarchal Palace grounds runs behind the crowd. Period costumes transform the everyday square into a small town watching its neighbours; the recognisable setting becomes part of the social pressure surrounding the couple.

Four Lions Fountain — with the gymnasium behind

The characters meet beside the Four Lions Fountain, with the Karlovci Gymnasium clock tower behind.

The lion-head spouts share the frame with a round of handshakes: the fountain becomes a meeting point in the town’s everyday life. Behind it, the gymnasium’s clock tower and terracotta arch place the encounter unmistakably in Karlovci. The camera joins a familiar monument to the small social rituals surrounding the couple.
