Read the town through its history

A first visit makes more sense when the buildings become parts of a story. Use this short introduction before a walk, then choose one subject to explore in greater depth. It is a starting point, not a complete history of the town.
A settlement, a treaty, a school
The name Karom appears in a record from 1308. The Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699 placed the town in the history of European diplomacy; the Peace Chapel recalls those negotiations. Karlovci Grammar School, founded in 1791, adds the story of education to this long past.
Keep that distinction in mind when reading a plaque. The age of a school does not necessarily tell you the age of its current building. Likewise, a memorial may have been built long after the event it remembers.
Look beyond the grand façades
The Four Lions Fountain dates from 1799 and commemorates the town's first water supply system. It offers a useful second perspective: urban history includes practical improvements as well as diplomacy and education.
Look at the inscriptions, materials and the way the square connects different buildings. The town’s past lives in everyday details as well as grand façades.
Turn curiosity into a visit
Choose the school if education interests you, the chapel for diplomacy, or the fountain for the development of the town. Read the relevant institution's information before arranging an interior visit. A building can be a landmark and still serve a working school or religious community.
Leave time to pause, notice a detail or take a photograph from a public place. A walk through Karlovci can be as much about small discoveries as famous landmarks.
