Varljivo leto ’68

A 1984 film directed by Goran Paskaljević, starring Slavko Štimac and Danilo Stojković. The “’68” in the title is the story’s year, not the film’s release year.

The house of Dimitrije Anastasijević Sabov became the setting for a library scene. It is one of the places connecting this coming-of-age film with Sremski Karlovci.

The cathedral beyond the rooftops

A family cycling along a street, with the twin towers of the Cathedral of St Nicholas in Sremski Karlovci beyond the rooftops.

Behind the cyclists, the twin clock towers of the Cathedral of St Nicholas rise above the low rooftops. Their curved pediments and slender spires identify Sremski Karlovci within the composition: the street draws the eye towards the church, while the riders bring everyday movement into the foreground.

The platform of the old Karlovci railway station

A man and a woman walk along the old Karlovci station platform, beside a yellow wall, green columns and metal railings.

The long platform becomes a stage for an awkward family encounter. The canopy columns and low metal railings divide the frame into spaces for waiting and passing, while the yellow station wall holds the composition together. The scene preserves the old station’s railway setting; it shows the historic building rather than today’s new passenger station.
